REPORTS TO: Section Leader - Applied Geoscience

Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) is the geoscience knowledge arm of the ERCB. The core activities of the AGS are to map the geological framework of the province and apply the mapping to provide knowledge with respect to groundwater resources, geological hazards and geomechanical issues in the province.

The aim of the Geological Hazards Program is to study Alberta's geology and identify geological hazards to support informed decision making by the ERCB and Albertans. We subdivide geological hazards into two groups, natural and anthropogenic. In the case of natural hazards, the trigger for an event or change is caused by a change in the natural environment, whereas for an anthropogenic hazard, the trigger for an event or change is caused by human activity with pre-existing natural conditions. In 2009 a portion of this program shifted to focus on characterizing anthropogenic hazards associated with resource extraction in the shallow subsurface and associated ground movements and seismicity. This part of the program seeks to provide regional data coverage on the geological framework, geomechanical characteristics and monitoring data in order to understand the effects of continued extraction of hydrocarbons from, and injection of fluids and material into the subsurface in Alberta.

PURPOSE OF ROLE:

Working with a team of engineers, geologists, seismologists and remote sensing specialists, the incumbent will participate in developing a vision for a geomechanics program within the ERCB to addresses geomechanical issues and support the regulatory process, with opportunities to lead and implement significant aspects of this program.
