IODP Science Manager

Employer: Ippan Shadan Hojin IODP-MI (ISHI), a Japanese subcontractor of Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Management International Inc. (IODP-MI). IODP-MI is a US based nonprofit organization that manages an international scientific research program that conducts Earth investigations by drilling, coring, and monitoring beneath the seafloor (www.iodp.org).

Position summary: This position reports to the IODP Vice President overseeing all IODP science planning, operations, data management/communication and publications. The position supports the Vice President in his/her fields of responsibilities including the following:

Management and support of the IODP science planning activities
Oversight of the IODP Science Advisory Structure (SAS)
Oversight of Scientific scoping of major/complex experiments
Communication with Program Member Offices (PMO)
Oversight of Site survey data bank contract
Assist with science data management
Review of Scientific Prospectus, Preliminary reports and thematic reviews
Assist in science communications and with editing of Scientific Drilling journal
Supervision of the Associate Science Manager and SAS Coordinator Assistant
Preferred Qualifications: Educational background with Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant field of Earth or Ocean sciences and preferable with 5 or more years of post-doctoral and/or science management experience. Prior experience with scientific drilling is highly beneficial. Strong motivation, managerial and interpersonal skills, and fluency in English (spoken and written) are essential and some knowledge of Japanese is desirable.

Workplace and compensation: Compensation package according to responsibilities and experience. The position is vacant from February 1st, 2011. The ISHI office is located at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology-Etchujima Campus in Tokyo, Japan.
