Job Description

NIWA is New Zealand's leading provider of atmospheric and marine science.

We are seeking an enthusiastic technician to join our marine physics team based on our Wellington campus. This person will provide technical support to NIWA's oceanography effort. They will work with marine scientists and technicians to support science projects and commercial research contracts set in the oceans around New Zealand. This includes a requirement to participate in research voyages. The core role will be assistance in ocean data collection. This will span equipment maintenance and mobilization, data acquisition from large and small vessels, data analyses and data management.

Candidates should have undertaken tertiary education in physical sciences or engineering and have experience in operating and maintaining scientific equipment. Experience in environmental field data acquisition, especially at sea, and in the analysis and interpretation of field data would be an advantage.

The position will require someone who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary team environment, has good communication skills and can also effectively prioritise and work unsupervised. Programming skills would also be an advantage.
