Job Description

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, a multidisciplinary centre for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for

1 Post-Doctorate in global fire modeling (2010-22)

The newly founded Emmy Noether independent junior research group “Fire in the Earth System”, funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG), will carry out fundamental research with the objective to improve our understanding of fire-climate feedbacks in the Earth System. Research will involve the implementation of a mechanistic terrestrial biosphere fire model into an Earth System Model (ESM) and the coupling of fire mediated climate relevant processes between the different ESM compartments, including the atmosphere, ocean and cryosphere.

We seek a post-doctoral scientist to perform research on global terrestrial biosphere fire modeling with a focus on human fire interactions. Research topics we are interested in include human fire interactions, such as land use change, fire ignition and fire suppression, their impact on climate, and how this anthropogenic climate forcing changes with socio-economic developments worldwide.

Applicants should have

* a PhD in Meteorology, Physics, Geography, Geosciences or related fields
* expertise in scientific computing, including very good programming skills (FORTRAN on Unix platforms)
* experience with data analysis and climate modeling
* experience and/or interest in global terrestrial biosphere modeling
* excellent communication skills in English

The position is initially offered for three years, with the possibility of an extension to five years, starting March 2011 or soon thereafter. Payment will be in accordance with a civil service position (TVöD E13), including extensive social security plans. Conditions of employment follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences, and those of the German civil service.

For further information, please contact Silvia Kloster (silvia.kloster@zmaw.de).

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientists and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status. All applications (including a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, copies of scientific degrees, and the names and contact information of two references), received before Dec 1st 2010 will receive full consideration. The position will remain open until filled.

Please send your application, preferably by e-mail to jobs@vw.mpimet.mpg.de (one PDF-attachment with max. 2MB only including all documents) or by post to:
