Postdoctoral Fellow in Physical Oceanography jobs at University of Southampton
Because of the central importance of water in the Earth system, the question of how the water cycle is changing and how it may change in future, is one of the most important issues surrounding anthropogenic climate change. Evidence for changes in the water cycle has recently been established through detailed analysis of ocean salinity records spanning the last 50 years.
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in Physical Oceanography, to investigate links between past, ongoing and predicted changes of ocean salinity and changes of the water cycle. A range of datasets and climate model experiments will be analysed, to test hypotheses regarding the associated processes and to attribute salinity changes between anthropogenic and natural causes. Novel diagnostic approaches include back-tracking of selected water masses and associated salinity anomalies back to surface ventilation sites. This research is part of a larger collaborative project involving climate modellers, atmospheric scientists and hydrologists at other leading institutes in the UK.
You will have a PhD in a relevant field (e.g. Physical Oceanography or Physical Climate Science), excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, and preferably some experience in the analysis of relevant observations and/or model data.
This is a two year fixed-term position, in the Physical Oceanography Research Group of the School of Ocean and Earth Science, at the University of Southampton. The School is located dockside at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.
