Department of Geography

School of Geography and Archaeology: The Human Environment

University College Cork (UCC) seeks an outstanding appointee for the full-time permanent position of Professor of Geography. The appointment is open to candidates from any established branch of Geography. The appointee will initially be expected to serve as Head of Department. This appointment forms the critical vision-building position that UCC needs to continue developing the discipline at university, national and international levels. The appointee will have a well-developed strategic view for the role of Geography in the 21st century, a proven commitment to excellence in research, teaching and curriculum development, and will provide innovative academic leadership to the Department. In addition to providing strong academic leadership, the successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as well as PhD supervision. The appointee will have a scholarly reputation of international standing, hold a doctorate in a recognised field of Geography and/or cognate area, and possess a significant track-record of sustained internationally published research and a proven record of seeking and obtaining substantial funding for research.

The successful candidate will have the skills to effectively convey the Department's vision, distinctive character and expertise to a range of audiences, including students, other university staff, government agencies and the wider community nationally and internationally. A track record of links with the public sector and/or involvement in a decision-making capacity with relevant government and community bodies would be an advantage.

Founded in 1909, Geography in UCC is highly regarded both nationally and internationally. The Department is a primary contributor to teaching and research activities within UCC in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences (CACSSS) and in the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS). In the area of teaching, the Department has established strong degree programmes at undergraduate (both BA and BSc degrees), Masters and PhD levels. These reflect the core nature of Geography as an academic discipline, both within the University and nationally. Staff members in Geography have also innovated and anchor jointly a number of cross-disciplinary degrees and diplomas: in the earth and environmental sciences; European studies; migration and diaspora studies; culture and integration; planning and sustainable development and in geoinformatics. The Department has initiated and sustains major developments in multi-level research activities across the Arts and Sciences. It has developed and supports prominent research units in UCC, which have established international reputations as centres of excellence.
