The Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research (CAWCR) is seeking a scientist to undertake research into improved quality control of weather radar wind and rainfall observations. The Australian radar network consists of 60 weather radars which are used to provide observations that are needed to detect and track high impact weather like severe thunderstorms and tropical cyclones. The Government has invested $48 million over seven years to install four new radars and to integrate the observations from the radar network into the numerical weather prediction models. Good quality data is essential and this role involves undertaking research into detecting and removing radar echoes that originate from non-meteorological targets. The successful applicant will have a strong background in mathematics and statistics and experience in writing software. Experience in working with data from weather radars will be an advantage.
