Job Description

Thanks to generous support from Total R&D, a global oil and gas company, the Department of Earth Science and Engineering wishes to appoint a Total Chair in Petroleum Engineering. The appointment will be at professorial level and the successful candidate will be an engineer, with an interest in improved oil recovery from carbonate reservoirs. Possible research topics include reservoir dynamics, complex processes in enhanced oil recovery, chemical and CO2 flooding applied to fractured reservoirs, micro-to-field-scale modelling and experiment and fundamental studies of wettability. Experimental skills in complex core flooding would be valuable. The successful candidate will build and lead an internationally prominent research group that will complement existing research strengths in petroleum geoscience, geophysics and engineering within the department.

The successful candidate will have a record of engagement with industry, have published widely in research journals and have the ability to obtain external research grants. He/she will contribute to our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes and play a full role in the strategic development of the department.

Applicants should hold a PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate science or engineering discipline. They should also have an outstanding research record, as demonstrated by their publications.

The Department of Earth Science and Engineering combines teaching and research in earth sciences with related engineering disciplines. We hold top scores for both teaching and research quality, with an undergraduate geosciences curriculum, an integrated suite of petroleum-related MSc programmes and a strong research activity. Overall we have 45 academic staff within the department, 200 undergraduates, over 150 MSc students and more than 120 PhD students.

Salary is negotiable with a minimum starting salary of £66,830 per annum. The post will be based at the South Kensington Campus.
