The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, a multidisciplinary centre for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for
1 Scientific Programmer (2010-23)
The newly founded Emmy Noether independent junior research group “Fire in the Earth System”, funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG), will carry out fundamental research with the objective to improve our understanding of fire-climate feedbacks in the Earth System. Research will involve the implementation of a mechanistic terrestrial biosphere fire model into an Earth System Model (ESM) and the coupling of fire mediated climate relevant processes between the different ESM compartments, including the atmosphere, ocean and cryosphere.
We seek a scientific programmer to aid in the development, support and optimization of a fire model as an interactive component of the Earth System Model.
Applicants should have
* a masters degree (or equivalent, a PhD is of advantage) in Meteorology, Physics,Geosciences or related fields
* excellent programming skills (Fortran, OpenMP and MPI, UNIX)
* experience working with high performance computing systems
* experience with data analysis of large datasets
* excellent communication skills in English
The position is offered for three years starting March 2011 or soon thereafter. Payment will be in accordance with a civil service position (TVöD E13), including extensive social security plans. Conditions of employment follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences, and those of the German civil service.
